Testimonials

"After visiting a private menopause practitioner because I was at the end of my tether with the way I was feeling about myself and my life, it was suggested I contact Dr Mary-Jane Budd for life coaching. I was unsure what to expect but contacted Mary-Jane anyway and so grateful I made the effort as I cannot believe the change in me as a result for the work we did together. Before I began the work with Mary-Jane I had a very poor opinion of myself and my life (I had lost myself), but now I like myself again and my life. Mary-Jane helped me to find myself and what I value in life (what was important to me).  Today I am enjoying life again. I am smiling more and having fun! The coaching with Mary-Jane was perfect for me at this stage of my life and for me it was so important to complete the homework suggested as I believe this was valuable to me moving forward each time we spoke. Today I have tools to help me each day.  Thank you, Mary-Jane, you have made a grumpy peri-menopausal woman feel worthy again. "

What is Coaching?

I am often asked what actually is coaching? Some people answer this question by saying what coaching ‘is not’ – coaching is NOT therapy. In coaching, the aim is to generate new behaviours rather than repair old behaviours. But I’m not sure this is a full description of coaching and it certainly doesn’t explain the process behind coaching. In coaching, I want people to unravel their thoughts and sort of break things down into manageable parts. Life can be very overwhelming at times and if we can use a coach as a ‘thought partner’ to help assess needs, come up with options, and then decide which path to take, then we can be more in control of how we go about our lives. So this picture is a good analogy for what coaching is but I think that there is a step missing. The part where we externalise those thoughts by verbalising them. So the tangled ball of wool may first be in front of us before we start to unravel it. We hear what we are saying and this means that we can process the challenge as if it is being spoken by someone else. This gives us space to come up with a plan to address the challenge and some neat balls of wool to work with.

So why do we need a coach for this? Well I think it is because it helps us to see more clearly if someone is there asking questions and listening to us. As a coach, there are a number of tools I use to first do the unraveling and then bring it back neatly – drawing, use of metaphor, journaling (for example). But I also think that coaching brings accountability and this means that people actually do what they say they are going to do!

What's on offer

Taking control of (peri) menopause

1-1 Coaching

To support women, I offer 1-1 coaching that individualises the approach you need to take to embrace this stage in life. An opportunity to reconnect with your values and make sure you are being the person you want to be. By taking you through a number of exercises I will show you how to be a more confident and value-driven person. I also offer tips and strategies to alleviate some of the more common symptoms of perimenopause and menopause such as anxiety and sleep disruption.

Group coaching

I also offer group approaches to address topics such as: alleviating anxiety, interrupted sleep, acknowledging your strengths, developing resilience, and building your confidence. It will also give you an opportunity to share your experiences with each other. The aim of these sessions is for you to take control of your menopause journey rather than menopause controlling you.

Menopause in the workplace

I offer talks, training, and coaching to organisations to encourage a culture of openly talking about menopause and how symptoms can impact the working day. This service is offered to women affected by menopause, their colleagues, and management to create an environment that women feel comfortable in expressing how they are feeling and what support they might need through this life stage. Increasing retention and increasing productivity by creating an environment where women feel supported and valued through this lifestage.

Training examples include:

Navigating Menopause: Menopause awareness and support in the workplace

At the end of this session, you will understand what is (peri)menopause, identify the symptoms of hormone fluctuation, the physical and psychological impact of these symptoms, and come away with an action plan to manage your menopause journey.

Leading with empathy: Menopause awareness and support for leaders

At the end of this session, managers and leaders will have gained a clearer understanding of what is (peri)menopause and the impact it has on both the individual and the organisation. The session aims to enable managers to create a plan to support women through reasonable adjustments and understanding.

I also offer consultation on creating a menopause policy for your workplace.
